3D Roof Drawing Exercise

Firstly draw the plans for the roof and then make REGIONs from the main parts. You may use the PEDIT command to get a single closed polygonal shape. The PEDIT command sometimes makes shapes that cannot be used in the EXTRUDE command, but by usig the REGION command which makes EXTRUDEable regions, we eliminate the possibility of any such problem.

Fig.2

Use EXTRUDE go give the roof its height for both pieces.

Fig.3

Align both parts, so that you can intersect them.

Fig.4

Use the INTERSECT command to make a single solid from the intersecting part of the both pieces.

Fig.5

To prepare the little part in front, use the REGION and the EXTRUDE commands.

Fig.6

The depth should be at least the same as the touching point.

Fig.7

And then arrange them as they should be in the actual roof.

Fig.9

Use the UNION command to join the pieces together. If you want some slope in the front piece, prepare a seperate piece and then use the SUBTRACT command to remove it from the main roof.

Fig.10

Fig.11

If you want a hollow roof, create a copy of the roof, and then scale it to be just a little bit smaller, align the two roofs together and use the SUBTRACT command to remove the smaller piece from the larger piece. Use ORBIT or VIEWCUBE to get a better perspective while aligning 3D objects. You can thus eliminate simple errors.

  1. I would like to share this Hip Tip with you. I teach this process since AutoCAD 2004. My first post in English was on the Jan 26, 2007 . What to do first 2D and or 3D? It seems to me easier to generate easily http://topcadexperts.com/?p=1179 the 3D roof and after obtain 2D elevations and plan using SOLVIEW and SOLDRAW commands. Recently I tweet about this http://twitter.com/topcadexperts/statuses/1824071122
