3D Modeling 7: EXTRUDE

EXTRUDE command is one of the command that I like to use when modeling 3D solids. Just like I use to do in my previous articles, I will not only explain about the command but give you two examples for you to practice how to use the command. Previously, our friend Özgür already wrote an article about this command. I suggest you to read his Command:_EXTRUDE article.
Command profiles that you can access through toolbar or DASHBOARD can help you to create a path or a solid model by extruding by a certain height. Let’s see the most primitive way of using the command.

In this figure, we obtained a solid by extruding a closed 2DPOLYLINE entity by 110 units height by using EXTRUDE command.
Command: _extrude
Current wire frame density: ISOLINES=8
Select objects to extrude: 1 found
Select objects to extrude:
Specify height of extrusion or [Direction/Path/Taper angle]: 110
This was the most primitive way of using EXTRUDE command. This time, let’s extrude the entity with angle.

Let’s enter 5 degrees “Taper Angle” during the execution of the command.
Command: _extrude
Current wire frame density: ISOLINES=8
Select objects to extrude: 1 found
Select objects to extrude:
Specify height of extrusion or [Direction/Path/Taper angle] <50.0>: t
Specify angle of taper for extrusion <0.00>: 5
Specify height of extrusion or [Direction/Path/Taper angle] <50.0>:
Here we simply saw the fundamentals of EXTRUDE command. Next, let’s extrude a profile along a path by using path entity.

You should be careful while preparing the path as you can see in Fig. 3. The path that you are going to prepare must be perpendicular to the surface of the profile and in direction of the profile that you are going to extrude.

You can see how width of the entity that you will obtain is affected depending on the position of the path with respect to profile. Which means that if you get the profile from outside it fits exactly according to the width of path, however if you take it from center its own width becomes a little bit more.

You can see what happens when the profile is not perpendicular to the path (on the right side). In this case, if you make normal EXTRUDE, then AutoCAD automatically grips the UCS of the plane and extrudes perpendicular to it (in the middle).

I love the way Arch. Orhan Toker explains his tutorials. Pls, sir kindly post how to make a model of a bolt and a nut to this site or my mail box.
The one explain by one student on this site was not clear enough for me. I need mr. Orhan Toker
explanation. It seems his is more experieced.

Sir,please tell me that is it necessary that for extruding the figure should be polyline .Please explain this concept.how to make a figure into a single entity.

Yes Arvind, you must prepare a closed 2D PLINE to extrude.

In previous version of AutoCAD I can pick up two free points to define height of extrude, it seems to be missing from new version.Here the first point is already define. Is there any way to restore that ability?
