AutoCAD 2008 and higher versions

AutoDESK finally added objects that are sensitive to drawings scale. By this way, we will get rid of problems of scaling a little bit, as mentioned in articles Understanding scale concept and units in Autocad and Scaling in Autocad drawings and layouts.

Let’s take a look at what these annotative objects are: hatches, texts, tables, dimensions, tolarances, detail texts, block and block properties. Let’s quickly remember, what our problems is related to these entities. If we have adjusted a text with 5 mm height in 1/50 scale, then we also would like to obtain it with the same height if we get print on 1/100 scale. Otherwise, it will get smaller half of the original size and it will be unreadable. Now, have this feature in AutoCAD. Let’s have a look at how it works.

First of all, let me mention that this feature is only functional in MODELSPACE. Of course we can use it also in paperspace ( LAYOUT ) inside windows that we open with MVIEW command. In order for this function to be used, a new scale control has been added to general toolbar (Fig. 1).

Figure 1
Figure 1

Before starting our drawing, first you set the working scale from here. In addition to this scale control, there has been new system variables as ANNOALLVISIBLE, MSLTSCALE, and SELECTIONANNODISPLAY added to AutoCAD. I will what these variables do in detail towards the end of this article. They will be much morer meaningful to you then.

Let’s start with hatches. When you enter HATCH command, you will see a new property in the window that opens up (Fig. 2).

Fig.2
Figure 2

You have to select this property for layout scaling. And then, you have to enter entity properties and make the layout scales, which you are going to use, ready (Fig. 3).

Fig.3
Figure 3

At the beginning, scale list includes only our working scale. We have to add the scales that we are going to use to this list (Fig. 4).

Fig.4
Figure 4

After this stage; when you select any of the scales1:20, 1:50 or 1:100, you will see that hatch scale automatically changes. If you select any of the other scales, then there will be no changes.

Fig.5
Figure 5

You can see 1:20 scale on the left and 1:100 scale on the right side of Fig. 5. Before finishing my first article, I would like to explain the system variables that I mentioned before:

ANNOALLVISIBLE : If it is 1, then the all of the annotative entities are visible. If it is 0, then only annotative entities that have the layout scale that you are currently using are visible.

MSLTSCALE : If it is 1, then line types change according to the layout scale. If it is 0, then line types are kept as they are.

SELECTIONANNODISPLAY: 0 means off and 1 means on. I will give a more explanatory example in my next article.

CANNOSCALE: You have to enter any of the values likw “1:20”, “1:50” that are in the scale list.

    Hello Mario,
Sorry for late reply and thanks for the nice words.
Open “Options dialog” ( Tools / Options from the pulldown menu ), then go to the Plot and Publish tab. Near the lower right corner you will see the “Plot stamp settings…” button. I wish this helps.
    Thanks for the comment again.
