Hello,

I saw that everybody liked the dimension settings and reading them, it means that everybody knows how to make dimensioning. :)

As you know them, let me explain the dimensioning buttons in the DIMENSION menu one by one. If the DIMENSION toolbar is not open, then you should right click any of the buttons and choose DIMENSION from there.

Fig.1
Fig.1

First one, and the most frequently used one is LINEAR dimensioning. By LINEAR, you can make horizontal and vertical dimensioning.

Command: _dimlinear

Specify first extension line origin or [select object]:1-Click on the first point.
Specify second extension line origin:2- Click on the second point.
Specify dimension line location or
[Mtext/Text/Angle/Horizontal/Vertical/Rotated]:Dimension text = 110
3-Click on the point where you want the dimension to be.

Fig.3
Fig.3 You can make linear dimensioning with 3 clicks.

After you make the second click;

MT enter  multitext box is opened.
T enter you can enter whatever dimension you want.
A enter  you can have the dimension text to be with angles by entering an angle.
H enter  makes horizontal dimensioning.
V enter  makes vertical dimensioning.
R enter makes dimensioning by giving angle to the dimension line.

*Tip-1: If you press ENTER after clicking linear, it is enough to click only the line that you will dimension.

*Tip-2: If you encounter a dimension that you don’t desire (i.e. 100.0235), press linear, click on the line, after pressing  T and then ENTER, input the dimension you want, and finally place the dimension an a proper location.

Aligned Dimension

With this dimensioning style, you can dimension angled lines which are not horizontal or vertical.

Command: _dimaligned

After you press the command, press enter once and click on the angled line. Then click at another proper point to place the dimension.

Arc Length

As it can be understood from its name, it measures the length or arcs. Its usage is quite simple. Just click on the arc you want to dimension. It may not be present in the previous articles, but there is remedy for it :)

Command: _dimarc
Select arc or polyline arc segment
:
Click on an arc or polyline.

Fig.7
Fig.7 Arc length can be measured by one click.

Ordinate Dimension

It shows the distance between the origin and the plane that we have chosen as X or Y. By other means, it gives the coordinates of the point.

Command: _dimordinate
Specify feature location:
Click on the point where you want to learn its position.
Specify leader endpoint or [Xdatum/Ydatum/Mtext/Text/Angle]: If you press X and ENTER, you get the distance of x relative to the origin, and if you press Y and ENTER, you get y distance relative to the origin.

Fig.9
Fig.9 Coordinate information

In the figure above, I clicked on the location where I want to learn the position, and then I pressed Y and ENTER. You can see the final dimension also in the lower left corner of the screen. Y distance of the position I have clicked is enclosed in red rectangular box. You can also see the coordinates at the lower left corner while you move your mouse.

P.S.: If the lower left corner is closed, left click on it, or write COORDS, ENTER, 1, ENTER in the command line.

Hope to see you in the second part.

i was wondering how to find and being able to make an arc length that you want. Im working on a project at work and its really hard to figure out. These are the two problems am having:

    1. I have to make an arc around probably has to have the length of 72 feet, but how can I figure out the height of it and being able to make the arc the same length of 72 feet?

    2. I also have to do a polar array of fixures that needs to be the Off center of what they want. for example, they want the off center of 4 inches, how?

if you can point me to the right direction, I would really appriciate it, and i have tried to look it up at F1 help for AutoCAD

I have been trying to find out how you make the extension lines perpendicular to the arc when using Dimension Arc Length for an arc under 90 degrees. At arcs of greater than 90 degrees the dimension looks correct. We are upgrading to AutoCAD Mechanical 2008 and I am still trying to find an solution to this problem.
