AutoCAD 2002 and higher versions

There is a very useful feature called GRIP in AutoCAD, which we don’t use very frequently. There are blue grip points on the entities that become visible when they are selected. These blue points become alive when they are picked by mouse cursor. You can see these points in Fig. 1.

Fig.1
Fig. 1

You remembered these points didn’t you? These GRIP points appear on screen when we select entities without running any command. When GRIP points are in blue color, they are called cold GRIP points. This means that when you click on them, they are ready to do any of the operations that are assigned to them. As soon as you pick any of these blue colored cold GRIP points, they become activated and their color turns into red (Fig. 2).

At this stage, an information about the active GRIP command is given at the command line:

** STRETCH **
Specify stretch point or [Base point/Copy/Undo/eXit]:

By default, the first command in the command chain is STRETCH. Indeed, STRETCH command changes its usage depending on which of the GRIP points of which entity you select. In our example, we selected the center point of a circle; so this time, STRETCH command will have the usage of MOVE command. Other vise, if we have selected any of the grip points that are on the circle, then we would change the diameter of the circle. Similarly, if you pick the GRIP point that is on the middle point of a line, MOVE command is activated. However, if you pick any of the end points of that line, the real STRETCH command is activated. If we press SPACE or ENTER buttons without doing anything, then next command in the command chain is activated. These commands are STRETCH, MOVE, ROTATE, SCALE, MIRROR respectively. For each command, COPY, UNDO and EXIT options are work in the same manner. If you select COPY option, then the original entity will remain as it is without changing and after executing commands like STRETCH, MOVE etc., a new entity will be created. For example, after selecting a circle from its GRIP points on it, then STRETCH command will be executed together with COPY option:

Fig.3
Fig. 3

As you can see in Fig. 3, the original entity is kept as it is and a new circle is created. Indeed, this operation works as an OFFSET command for the circle entity. If you try this operation, you will see that you can make several copying operations unit you select EXIT option. If this feature is used together with CTRL button, then you can do copying with certain spacing. Let’s see how this happens with an example on a line.

Fig.4
Fig. 4

After selecting the GRIP point at the middle point of the line use COPY option. If you press CTRL button while selecting the location of the new line, then you will see that you can copy the original line with spacing equal to the first space that you selected until you release the CTRL button. Finally, I would like to mention that you can use the cold GRIP points as SNAP POINTs too. You can work more on different entities and discover by yourself what kind of many other editing operations you can do by using GRIPs.

If you hold down the SHIFT key after the grips turn blue, you can select multiple individual grips for moving, stretching etc.

For jonalyn - your acad may have re-set Dblclkedit; it needs to be set to 1 for double clicking on an entity to brings up the relevant editing dialogue box.
Pickfirst has to be set to 1 to enable it.

Hope these tips are of use.

I’ve lost my “grip” ! First I lost my ability to have running grips and could only select objects one at a time. Now they are invisible so it is time to get some help before I do more damage !

    Hello Mart,
Enter options dialog (Tools/Options) and activate the ‘Selection’ tab. In ‘Grips’ section check ‘Enable grips’ option. Also check ‘Noun verb selection’ and uncheck ‘Use shift to add to selection’ options in ’selection modes’ section.
    Hope this helps.

When I zoom extents, I find that I have grips all over the place. I don’t see them until I ctrl+A (select all). Just wondering if there was an easy way to get rid of these. Also, when I zoom in and out, I can see glitches of text blocks. Any suggestions?

I want to grip edit a line by a certain dimension, by making the line, for example, 3′ shorter. When I select the blue grip and move it in the direction I want to make line shorter, and I type in the 3′, nothing happens. Do you know what might be wrong?
