AutoCAD 2004 and higher versions

In this article, I will explain how to prepare a block library by using TOOLPALETTE feature in AutoCAD. TOOLPALETTE, that is first introduces in AutoCAD 2004, features as a side menu for such applications.

Let’s proceed with the subject:

1. For example, you would like to publish some standard parts that are commonly used by your company. The most practical way to do this is classifying your blocks into groups that you will determine by yourself and store them together. Besides, all of the blocks ( “Part01”, “Part02” and “Part03” ) that are shown below are all stored in the same drawing file and “Library01.dwg” name was used as the filename. These blocks inside the drawing represent different cover parts and are organized in a logical way.
One of the biggest advantages of storing blocks all together inside the same drawing is that AutoCAD files don’t occupy much space. By this way, it will be easier to use the same file for searching files and changing any property of the block.

2. If the TOOLPALETTE is not seen on the screen, then you can use either TOOLPALETTES command, Tool/Tool Palettes menu command or ‘CTRL+3’ button combination. Press the right mouse button and enter ‘New Palette’ command. Then, create a new library (page, tab).

3. I gave the name of ‘MyBlock‘ to the new tab, of course you can name it in different ways.

4. Let TOOLPALETTE stay on the screen. Now, we will open DESIGNCENTER‘ by using ‘CTRL+2’ button combination and enter the location of “Library01.dwg” file that I explained above into the ‘Folders’ section. When you click on the ‘Blocks’’ from tree-menu, you can see the blocks that exist inside this drawing. You can ‘Drag and Drop’ the blocks that you can see here from window number (1) to window number (2). You can select the blocks one by one by using ‘SHIFT + Left mouse button’.

5. As a result of this operation, AutoCAD will prepare ‘Thumbnail’ views for all of the blocks here.

6. You can change the names and several properties of blocks by using ‘Properties’ option.

Thanks for the tips. Very nice description. But I do have two questions. First, wouldn’t a whole seperate set of tool palattes for specific company specific requirements be better? Less chance to mess up AutoCAD menu’s, easier to maintain, etc. Second, what is the advantage of having one drawing with a lot of blocks in it, too having each block as a drawing in a specific folder?

    Hello Mr.Donaldson,

    I’m sorry for my late answer;

ANSWER - 1: I agree that AutoCAD Menu as standard file to maintain. Specific
requirements to handle with tool palettes is the better way.

ANSWER - 2: Each drawing (*.dwg) have a binary description in the headline
like DXF file. For example: HEADER, TABLES, CLASSES, THUMBNAILIMAGE etc.
Many drawings need more disk space for this information. For a technician
is very important that less time needed for modifications. I prefer
one drawing to open for any change …

    Thank you for your interest!
