Hello Daily AutoCAD readers,

DIVIDE and MEASURE commands are the oldest commands in AutoCAD. However, those old days are not known by many of today’s users and these commands do not get the respect that they earn. In this article, I would like to show you two practical applications that can be made by using these two commands. By this way, you can learn about the commands and you can also see what kind of practical work can be done by them.

Application.1 Drawing a footpath by using MEASURE command.

Fig.1
Figure.1 Stone footpath

The stone footpath shown in Figure.1 can be drawn much more easier than it looks to be.  First of all, prepare the stone step that is shown in Figure.2. You can do this by creating a free style POLYLINE inside a 50×75 rectangle and then by converting this polyline into a SPLINE entity by using PEDIT command. Then, convert this entity into a block, which has “stone” name, by selecting the middle point of the entity as insertion point.

Fig.2
Figure.2 Stone block

Now, draw the footpath by using the same POLYLINE – PEDIT – SPLINE method as shown in Figure.3 and enter he command.

Fig.3
Figure.3 SPLINE that is created for drawing the footpath

Command: measure
Select object to measure:
“select the footpath that you have just created”
Specify length of segment or [Block]: b “I will use blocks when dividing”
Enter name of block to insert: stone “enter the name of the block”
Align block with object? [Yes/No] : Y “stone will also turn as the footpath turns”
Specify length of segment: 55 “Step distance between two stones”

As you can see, the footpath was created very quickly.

That’s all for this article. In my next article about use of divide and measure commands, I will explain another application of these commands where we will draw the hand railing for stairs. Till then, have a nice day.

Do you know of an lisp program that would call up a dialog box to select the block for Measure or Divide? Sometimes it’s hard to remember the block name.

Anyone know why blocks with attributes lose their attributes when inserted using the measure command?

Hello: My company currently uses custom linetypes
in order to display led lights spaced according to specs within letters as a layout for customers to use for inserting the leds into their signs.

After these custom linetypes are drawn in each letter, they have to physically hand count the number of leds for each letter. This is extreemly time consuming and I would like to eliviate the problem.

I learned from an article you wrote that creating a block allows you to count the number used by using bcount and so I wanted to try to use blocks in my custom line type; I read that to do this, I would need to create the block as a shape and so I went to Express- Make shape and began to follow the instructions from the command promt. The problem I ran into is that it asks me to select the object and when I try to do so, it doesn’t recognize the object (I’m assuming because it’s a block)…I don’t want to explode the object because I want to be able to use bcount for the blocks in the line type. Does anyone know if this is possible?

If not, is there a way to get any kind of count in a linetype?

    Thank you….

When I try to use measure command to insert a block made up of a single line (when drawn horizontally) with center as insertion point, it is not inserted perpendicular on a zig zag polyline. I used a vertical line to make a block instead. Then repeated to insert the block on the same line, it worked. What is the logic behind?

i FOLLOWED THE DIRECTIONS, YET THE BLOCKS DID NOT APPEAR. IS THIS A PROBLEM WITH MY SETTINGS?
