External References in AutoCAD: XREF – 2
AutoCAD 12 and higher versions

In my previous article, we learned how to put together drawings that are prepared for different disciplines for the same project by using XREFs. Careful users have already noticed that it is very difficult to make changes in furnishing drawings without the architectural drawings. For this reason, OVERLAY option is also available for users. Only difference between OVERLAY and XREF is that coincidences are allowed in OVERLAYs when putting sub-drawings together. To make it more understandable, let’s go back to our example.

If we use the architectural drawing ( oproom-arch.dwg ) as overlay for furnishing drawing ( oproom-equip.dwg ), then, while attaching ( XATTACH ) these two drawings in the main drawing ( oproom.dwg ), architectural drawing and the same drawing that is used as an overlay inside the furnishing drawing will not coincide. AutoCAD will directly eliminate the drawing that is used as an overlay. Thus, it will be as if we place the architectural plan under the tracing paper in the traditional drawing. Now, let’s take a look at how this is done:

Similar to inserting XREF, we start by using XATTACH command (Fig. 1). However, we mark ‘Overlay’ as ‘Reference Type’ in the window opened. That’s all! Now, we will draw our furnishing not blindly (Fig. 2).

In the final article of the series, I will explain how to use blocks, layers and text styles inside XREF.

Have a nice day.
