Autocad, Blocks, Hints & Tips, Layer, Plotting, PrintoutExternal References in AutoCAD: XREF – 3
AutoCAD 12 and higher versions
If you insert one or more number of XREF into your drawing, on the contrary to blocks, properties like blocks inside them, layers and text styles are not transferred to the main drawing. If otherwise is not stated than, AutoCAD does not allow the usage of blocks, text styles etc. However, layers are an exception. Because, we are strictly bound to layers depending up on our drawing management. Layers on the external drawing are transferred to the main drawing with the EXTERNAL DRAWING|LAYERNAME orientation (Fig. 1).

Fig. 1
Then, what about the blocks? Even though we can see them in the main drawing, we cannot find them in the block list in the INSERT command. We come up against a simple window when we enter command (Fig. 2).

Fig. 2
In the window on the left side, there is a list of external drawings. We can transfer any object we want from this list, under any title we want to the list on the right side. Note that, names of the transferred objects come with the same orientation. Reason for this is to prevent name conflicts. After this stage, the important part that you should keep in mind is that, objects that are attached to drawing by using XBIND, will not be refreshed by XREF/RELOAD. Because it does not have any relation with the external drawing any more. On the other side, there is also an option in AutoCAD for attaching the external drawing completely inside the main drawing (Fig. 3).

Fig. 3
You can do this operation from XREF management palette. However, any external drawing attached by this method totally loses its properties. By this way, there is no chance for updating any changes in the external drawing to the main drawing.
So, I finish this series of articles by mentioning that we are waiting for your example drawings to publish and questions about XREF.
Have a nice day…

Can I attach the same xref twice but be able to freeze different layers on these xrefs. For example attaching a floor plan twice in a drawing, and on the first instance turn “door layer” off, without the second instance being affected from this.
Was this confusing enough?

AutoCAD 2004 Help!!
Please can you help. I have xrefed a file into a drawing. On my page layout I double click on the viewport to get into model space. Then I express freeze the layers of the xref I don’t want. This is fine and on the quick layer properties the frozen page icon is on. I come back out into paper space. The problem occurs when I refresh the xref all the layers I’d frozen come back on!
Any advice?
Thanks

Xbind the Xref after inserting xreferenced drawing; then use COPY to make a second copy of the already Xbinded Xref drawing, and assign a new layer to it, so it will not be affected when layers of the Xbinded drawing are turned off.

Re: xref attached twice – attach your drawing, then click the name within the xref manager dialog & rename the xref. At this point you can attach the same file again; it will show in the xref manager with it’s original file name. You now have 2 xref files (that look to the same ‘other’ file) by which you can manipulate all layer settings independently!

Hi,
I have opened someone elses drawing which has XREFs attached, but the XREFs do not load with the drawing. We are both working from the same location, so the file paths are correct.
If I detach and reattach the XREFs my ciollegue can not see the files.
Any clues as to why this is happening and how it can be fixed.

Hi there,
I am having an issue in Autocad 08′ in which an xref file will not properly bind. The file will attach and load fine, and I can see the xref in the model space, but when I try to bind it into the main drawing it gets to 99% and then freezes up. Could it be an overlapping block name or something which is causing it to hang?

What are the benefits of attaching an xref vs. overlaying an xref in a drawing?
Are there still pitfalls to having multiple xrefs, circular xrefs, nested xrefs and the like in 2008 AutoCAD? A lot of these i found can be avoided by overlaying instead of defaulting to attaching xrefs.
thanks for your thoughts on this.

Hi Erhan,
Have just found your lessons whilst browsing the internet and have a question I was wondering if you could help me with.
When attaching external references they occasionally have supplimentary files with spots in the icon.
These sometimes say they are unreferenced and I’m worried that there will be a problem when I zip the finished file and send it out.
All the files which I X ref in have been sent to me by others.
Please can you tell me if this is a problem?
Thanks, T.
