Hello Daily AutoCAD readers,
There are many innovations in technology nowadays which provides us a wide range of choices for computer hardware selection. In my opinion, especially Core2Duo of Intel and wide screen LCD monitors are some of the most important new technologies.
Most of our readers ask me all the time about which type of monitor to select for almost 20 years. So, I thought that I should clear out the situation. Nowadays LCD monitors are dominating the market. At least we can start by not buying a CRT monitor. After this point, your decision will depend on the purpose for which you will be using your computer for. If you are using your computer for gaming or multimedia purposes, your selection will be different if you are going to use it for office works, cad or editing purposes.
For gaming and entertainment: If you are a profy gamer, then you already must have a good VGA card and a pixel monster monitor. If you already have a CRT monitor, then you can keep it for now. Because even the new LCD monitors don’t have its refreshing rate yet. However, if you still insist on buying an LCD monitor, then I suggest that you should buy a wide-screen LCD with at least 5ms response time which will be ideal for watching DivX movies. You don’t need a high resolution. In my opinion, a 20” wide-screen is enough for you already.
For office, CAD and text editing: If you are doing simply office works and surfing in the internet, then you should buy a 17” LCD with 4:3 aspect ratio. If will be cheap and best suited for you. But if you are working with CAD applications, then a 22” LCD with 16:10 aspect ratio will be best for your eyes and efficiency of your work. Whatever your choice is, you should select a monitor with digital input and you should connect to your computer with DVI (or HDMI) cable, so that you will not have any problems at all.
If you ask for a brand, then I will definitely suggest PHILIPS LCD. I’m using PHILIPS 200XW 20″ wide monitor.
Good bye and have a nice day

I recently bought a Samsung 24″ LCD monitor with a 16:10 aspect ratio. However, I am noticing circles on my display appear closer to elliptical in shape instead of round. Are there settings which would allow me to get around this? Would appreciate any input you may offer.

Probably, your screen resolution is not set properly. The right setting should be 1920×1200 for 24″ display. Please try to install your monitor drivers. If you already have your VGA card may not fit the requirements of LCD monitor.

hello everyone.. i just want to know if 19″ lcd monitor is suitable for autocad?? if yes, what ratio is recommended? thank you very much…

Of course 19″ LCD is one of good choices. Best resolution is 1280×1024 for 19″ LCD 4:3 ratio. But if i were you, i would prefer a 20″ or 22″ wide 16:10 LCD. 1600×1050 resolution gives a wider area for your dashboard.

The absolutely best CADD monitor available today at a very affordable price is the “Westinghouse L24NM Multifunctional Monitor”. We specialize in 3D-Modeling and Animation and we checked out all of the 24″ LCD monitors out there. This beauty installed itself right out of the box and at 1920 x 1200 x 60 hz. resolution, it looks just perfect. Highly recommended.

I’m trying to help my brother find a new monitor for working in autocad 2000 (I know, that’s ancient in software years, but he doesn’t have the funds to upgrade).
There are plenty of widescreen LCD monitors available, but he tells me the toolbars at the top and bottom can not be moved and the workspace would be squished. Other than using autocad, he is a computer novice. I on the other hand, have good experience with PC’s but none with autocad.
My most pertinent question is if the output resolution is adjustable in autocad 2000. ??? Bro’s PC is a 2007 model with a basic core-duo processor and the graphics card is a mid-line Radeon with 256mb onboard memory. I know the card will match the resolution of most of today’s monitors, but that won’t help much if autocad keeps bumping it to 800×600 (or whatever it’s doing [bro lives a few hundred miles away, so I’m ‘off-site’]).
Any assistance greatly appreciated!!!

Hello Imran,
LCD Monitors have fix resolutions. Resolution must be 1280×1024 for most of 17″ LCD’s.

Hi Jack,
Most of 22″ LCD are giving 1600×1050 res. This causes bigger pixels. I prefer 24″ Wide LCD (which is 1900×1280) for best gaming.
My favorite brands are DELL, ViewSonic and PHILIPS
