Autocad, Hints & TipsHip tip: Zoom and Pan via mouse scroll
I am going to touch on two system variables in this article that will be useful for you. These are MBUTTONPAN and ZOOMFACTOR.
MBUTTONPAN: Autocad users mostly use the mouse scroll to pan or zoom. It zooms in when you spin the scroll towards you and zooms out when you spin it towards the monitor. Holding it pushed also enables the pan command. Yet, some computers have some trouble about these properties because of a small setting of Autocad. If your computer does not do the things mentioned above, set the system variable MBUTTONPAN to 1 by typing the command (mbuttonpan) into the command line. If it is “0” , Object Snap Menu will appear when you push the scroll.
ZOOMFACTOR: It is very practical using mouse scroll to zoom in or out. But sometimes it is very tiring as scrolling again and again to zoom in and out in detailed drawings. On the other hand, one scroll can be too much for simple drawings. To cope with this problem, you have to change the ZOOMFACTOR system variable. It is sufficient to type ‘zoomfactor’ into the command line and set a value between 3 and 100 which designates the zoom intervals.

Hello… this may be a bit off topic but I am trying to find a way to make a modification to the middle mouse button behavior with AutoCAD 07. I use it side by side with SolidWorks quite often; however, the zoom features are opposite, scroll up equals zoom in on one and zoom out on the other. Its kinda confusing when quickly jumping back and forth. I also frequently use Unigraphics and some Pro-E which have the same zoom function as SolidWorks so I want to change the AutoCAD function to match. So…. Is there a registry setting that I can edit to make scroll down equal zoom in?

I use this function all the time, but in 2008 if you have the shift key held down while panning or zooming you enter the orbit function. Do you know of any work around?

Do you know how to do this same feature, with the zoomfactor, in Rhino or 3dsMax? It gets to a point sometimes where it won’t zoom in any further and it’s way too far out. Or it zooms in too much right past the model. Off-topic of AutoCAD, but thanks!

Hi, thanks for your help. Just another thing is , it’s not working for pan 2009 when we use another external sofware support for mouse. Ex: I turn off Dell mouse support software, and pan work beautiful as we want like 2008
