Hello,
You can follow the steps below to draw a simple 3-dimensional gear, this is how it should look when we’re done.

Firstly, we sketch the outlines of our drawing. Fig.1

Fig.1
Then we add a line joining the two outer circles as in Fig.2

Fig.2
We then offset this line 3 and then 4 units to the right and the left respectively. Fig.3

Fig.3
We join the end points of the two lines as in Fig.4

Fig.4
We use the TRIM command to get rid of the excess lines and obtain Fig.5

Fig.5
Now use the ARRAY command to make 16 copies in total around the center of the circles Fig.6

Fig.6
Redraw the Ø60 circle and TRIM the lines as in Fig 7. This is the final shape we need before going into the third dimension. For us to be able to EXTRUDE this shape into a 3-D object, we need to make this a ‘boundary’, so type BO to activate the command, and select POLYLINE from the drop-down menu. This step is important for the third dimension.

Fig.7
Switch to ISOMETRIC view to get a better understanding in the process, and EXTRUDE the object 10 units. Use SUBTRACT command (also available from the solids editing toolbar) to remove the hole from the solid,

Have a wonderful day, and please write any questions you have in the comments below.

Dear Friend,
While this maybe a method for drawing a representation of a gear wheel, the reality is not that simple as a great deal of calculation needs to be done before a profile of a gear can be drawn (such as addendum and dedendum values, centre distances of meshed gears, pressure angles, tooth arc thickness, base circle geometry, type of profiling as in involution or cycloidal etc.) If you like I would be glad to send you a few professionally constructed engineered models.
Best regards…………..iky (iky-one@operamail.com)

Can you guys please help me ? Because i m using this program call Unigraphics to draw out my model.
However, I needed 2D drawings from autocad as a reference. If you could, please send it to death_knight321@hotmail.com . Please help me ! I m having lots of problems in school.

Hi Tim,
No problem, please tell me the type of gear or gears (if meshed) you require to model i.e. Bevel, Spur, Helical, Worm & Rack in mesh, Hypoid Bevel etc. I have done some pretty complex gear box designs with the maths included,

Oh yay, i just need a normal wheel gear for reference. Well, the main purpose of my workpiece is to be used as a training piece for a CMM ( Coordinate measuring machine ). As I’m needed to create such workpiece, i could only draw out basic drawings of a normal gear.
iky thank you very much. Hopefully i could use your designs to assist me in my school project.
Regards tim.

Hi Tim,
I’m just going to forward you a 3D Sectional Model of a series of Spur Gears which I did as part of a gearbox design. I also have the mathematical calculations for construction as well as the geometry data. The file is in AutoCAD Dwg format meaning you will need the software to open otherwise you can open with the DWG viewer (free fom Autodesk). If you need precisional data you can always reverse engineer the model and Flatshot, otherwise ask me for further info.

hi,
iky how r u. can u plzzzzzzz send me the detaile drawings data for spur, bevel, helical, double helical gears on my e.add sf_shafiq@yahoo.com
i would be very very thank ful to u.
basically i want to generate data for cnc machines for all gearing types and my mission is to get the designing data for the gears.
